When I was a progressive (I am since disillusioned), I noticed that many of the feminists around me had experienced either abusive relationships with men or daddy issues. My mom, for instance, lost her dad at 14, and whenever she is inconvenienced in any way, she copes like a teenager. She identifies strongly with other women who have endured trauma and often feels uncomfortable around dominant, assertive men. She didn’t want me playing sports and dressed like an Amish person for most of my life as a rebellion against the “trophy wife” stereotype. Drove my poor dad up the wall.
